Welcome To Wananchi Maternity and Nursing Home

Wananchi Maternity and Nursing Home;Wananchi Jamii Maternity and Nursing HomeMaternity and Nursing Home; This health Facility was founded by Magdaline Wairimu Thiga and Family, who is a Kenyan registered nurse working in a slum in Kware village of Ong’ata Rongai, Kajiado North District in Rift Valley County. In April 1983, the whole family moved from Nairobi and settled in Ong’ata Rongai neighbouring Kware village slums. When the community discovered that Magdaline was a nurse, and working in Kenyatta National Hospital with a passion of helping, they started coming for health advice and consultations. She had to make occasional night trips back to Kenyatta national hospital to take the sick for treatment.

This inspired her to start a small clinic where she could attend the community members on cases of minor illnesses and refer the complicated cases to Kenyatta National hospital . The services would be offered at a small affordable fee. This went a long way to aid in buying drugs and renting a room. As time went by, the number of those patients who needed help increased, she decided to stop working for the Government at Kenyatta National Hospital and hence went into full time community service for the sick through the clinic.

In 1990, she resigned from the government and hired a bigger premise so that she could serve the community more effectively. This time she was often on call in their tiny houses where she would use flash light and lighted lamps to conduct deliveries. This is because there was insufficient lighting in the community’s houses due to lack of power supply. The situation was hard, it was not easy to maintain aseptic techniques or detect complications early. This led to complications such as Post Pertum Hemorrhage, Ruptured uterus, Vesicovaginal fistula (VF), placenta retention and infections, which at times sadly resulted in death.

She therefore opened a place where the women could deliver in a clean environment and go home after 1-2 days. She also provided pre-natal care before they deliver to ensure all is well with the pregnancy. Also, post delivery advice was provided to them on:- early detection of complications after labour and delivery, proper diet, general cleanliness, breast feeding and the importance of taking the child for immunization to protect them from early infant diseases. This further inspired her, in 1994, to move to a lager premise and start a Maternity home because mothers were delivering at home with no proper medical care. The nursing home has now grown gradually over the years and we now have our premises. The Maternity Home / Clinic provides medical care to the less privileged people of low income. They are not able to afford the high cost in hospitals as most of them have no medical health insurance cover. We are always driven by our mission statement “Your health is our concern”. The Nursing home has continued to expand its services to be a one stop shop and we look forward to provided theatre services in future.
